Tartu Prison – Drone Surveillance

Bionic System Solutions has from its start had a close collaboration with the Danish Defense focused on the development of counter drone systems. One spin of from this collaboration has been the development of the acoustic solution for drone surveillance entering the prison space.  BSS has now delivered the first C-UAS system to the Tartu prison in Estonia.

The challenge
With the instant improvements in technology and increased public interest, the number of commercial unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) – or drones – and their applications are rising dramatically. While giving numerous advantages in current applications such as aerial surveillance, high-resolution imaging/mapping and facility inspection, there is a growing need to ensure safe and secure operation and to counter unauthorized, criminal, or even terroristic activities.

The BSS C-UAS solutions will be part of an early alarm system to detect nonwanted drone flights. Specifically, the threat to the prison safety is that drones will enter the prison, delivering drugs, weapons, or other non-wanted material.

The solution
The overall goal of the solution is to make a flexible, accurate, and cost-effective C-UAS detection system.  Lizard360 makes it possible to detect drones and other objects with the use of passive and active sound source localization, within certain limits.  The solution has been developed in close collaboration with the Danish defense and the University of Southern Denmark. It is an innovative sensor for localization and control of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), e.g., drones.

By selling this system to Estonia, BSS will provide the opportunity for continuous 24/7 surveillance potential of unwanted drone activity, as well as a flexible and easy-to-use system for various new  locations that can easily be expanded by more sensors units to make earlier warnings from various positions.

The system can also be integrated with other surveillance systems to maximize surveillance potential.

Bionic System Solutions, is very happy to have installed the Lizard360 solution in Estonia – and think the solutions will be very optimal for similar solutions to other prisons and safety areas. The BSS C-UAS solutions will be part of an early alarm system to detect nonwanted drone flights. Specifically, the threat to the prison safety is that drones will enter the prison, delivering drugs, weapons, or other non-wanted material.
