Remote oversight onboard

Knud E. Hansen A/S transformed traditional ship maintenance into a proactive and data-driven operation with BSS Analytics.
When a maritime vessel is underway, sudden equipment failure leads to more than unexpected downtime, it may become a critical disruption. A small error within the engine room can have great repercussions, causing significant delays, navigational deviations, and may induce unforeseen operational costs.
However, and most importantly, mechanical failures occurring at sea increase the risk to vessel personnel, necessitating effective mitigation strategies. In this context, remote asset monitoring enables operators to adopt data-driven and proactive maintenance protocols, thereby reducing the likelihood and impact of such hazards.
A Digital Lookout
To address this issue, Knud E. Hansen A/S, one of Denmark's longest standing maritime companies, collaborated with BSS on a development project. In this context, the maritime company integrated BSS Analytics to remotely monitor machine conditions onboard.
Through sensor fusion and advanced pattern recognition, BSS Analytics acts as a digital watchkeeper, identifying even the slightest operational drifts. By issuing early warnings and performance reports, the platform enables the technical crew onboard to intervene proactively before a small error converts to unexpected downtime. Furthermore, the platform ensures that both the ship crew and the technical managers ashore have a transparent view of the machine conditions onboard.
“By using the new possibilities that AI and Machine Learning potentially have in connection with monitoring the condition of machinery on board ships, we see a new opportunity to meet a large need. This can be met by shipping companies via a better tool to uncover the extent and understand the entire condition picture, to be able to extend overhaul intervals, and identify incipient problems.”

Smooth Sailing
BSS Analytics supports Knud E. Hansen in minimising the occurrence of mechanical failures, mid-voyage emergencies, and the substantial costs associated with reactive maintenance. With BSS Analytics, the maritime personnel have gained a reliable tool to support vessel uptime and safety.
In an industry where reaction time is measured in knots and minutes, BSS Analytics provides the proactive edge needed for an undisturbed and successful voyage.
