Bionic System Solutions (BSS) has been selected by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) as one of five contractors awarded framework contracts for tactical and deployable Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS).
As part of this framework, BSS has brought together a consortium of leading European technology companies, Robin Radar Systems, CircleScope and MyDefence. In this consortium, each partner provides complementary capabilities to deliver a layered approach to counter small and tactical unmanned aircraft.
Small drones pose an increasingly persistent threat to deployed forces, critical infrastructure and civilian populations. Effective protection requires the ability to detect, identify, track and respond to threats across different ranges and operating environments. The BSS-led consortium addresses this requirement by combining complementary detection and countermeasure capabilities into a complete C-UAS solution.
This solution, or system of systems, includes radar, rf, EO/IR, acoustics and effectors, which enable the consortium to offer a comprehensive and modular defensive capability.
Robin Radar Systems provides the radar detection and tracking layer. Its IRIS radar delivers 360° three-dimensional coverage, real-time multi-target tracking and micro-Doppler-based classification, helping establish early warning and provide accurate target locations to other sensors in the C-UAS network. The system is designed for integration with C2 platforms and other sensors, making radar data available to cue and support the wider defensive architecture.
CircleScope contributes an AI-enhanced EO/IR layer for visual detection, classification, tracking and target verification. CircleScope’s cameras complement the sensor network by providing visual and thermal confirmation objects. In previous multi-sensor C-UAS activities, CircleScope’s EO/IR systems have been integrated with BSS acoustic detection, allowing acoustic detections to cue the cameras towards a target for rapid visual verification and tracking. MyDefence provides the RF detection and countermeasure layer, together with the command-and-control backbone that connects the different layers. Its C-UAS portfolio combines RF-based drone detection with jamming capabilities, while C2-platform fuses data from all the integrated sensors into a common operational picture. This provides the consortium with the ability to integrate and coordinate multiple sensing and response technologies through a single C2 architecture.
BSS fills the acoustic sensing layer with its passive acoustic C-UAS technology. BSS' Komodo sensor uses distributed microphones and signal processing to detect, localise and classify UAS based on their acoustic signatures. Acoustic detection adds an important complementary sensing modality, particularly because it can operate passively and provide detection and localisation data that can be used to cue other sensors.
Together, the four technologies create a layered sensor architecture in which each modality complements the others. Radar provides broad-area detection and tracking; acoustic sensing adds passive detection and localisation; RF sensing identifies electromagnetic signatures; and EO/IR provides visual confirmation and detailed target tracking.
The resulting sensor data is brought together through MyDefence C2 architecture, providing operators with a unified operational picture and enabling the system to coordinate sensors and effectors according to the threat and operational context.
About the framework
The NSPA framework is set to provide NATO Allies and partner nations with a faster and simpler route to acquire pre-qualified C-UAS capabilities. The framework established by NATO NSPA consists of five framework contracts under the initiative and intends to continue expanding its C-UAS catalogue as requirements evolve. Ultimately, the framework is designed to make current, proven capabilities more readily accessible to NATO forces and partner nations.
